Manual Osteopathy FAQ

What is Manual Osteopathy?

Manual osteopathy (MO) is a complementary form of healing that focuses on the interrelationship between the structure and function of the body. The goal is to work toward total body health by treating and strengthening the musculoskeletal framework, including joints, muscles, and the spine. MO aims to positively affect the body’s nervous, circulatory, and lymphatic systems. Using a subtle, hands-on technique called palpation, MO helps restore function by treating the causes of pain and imbalance.

Can I add manual osteopathy to my regular massage therapy treatment?

Yes. Manual osteopathy can be combined with massage therapy for more thorough relief. It’s also a great way to try MO without committing to a full treatment. Learn more about our massage therapy services.

What do Manual Osteopaths do?

Manual osteopaths identify, assess, and treat the body’s structures and rhythms using osteopathic palpation—a highly trained sense of touch. By “listening” to the body, they can detect congestion, dehydration, scarring, and stiffness, and then restore proper function to bones, muscles, fluids, and organs.

What techniques do Manual Osteopaths use?

Manual osteopaths use a variety of techniques to address imbalances from a whole-body perspective:

  • Osteopathic Articular Technique: Reduces muscle spasms near a joint, eases neurological irritation, improves mobility, and reduces pain by gently moving joint surfaces.
  • Soft Tissue Manipulation: Improves blood and lymphatic flow, reduces fluid retention, boosts immunity, and balances fascia tension to restore tissue health.
  • Cranial Osteopathy: A very gentle technique used to assess and treat the skull, spine, sacrum, and other areas. Helps restore balance to circulation and the body’s natural rhythm.
  • Visceral Manipulation: Gently mobilizes organs and their connective tissue (fascia) to improve blood flow, mobility, and organ function.

Does Manual Osteopathy hurt?

Treatments are not usually painful, but some discomfort may occur depending on the condition. Most techniques are gentle. Practitioners will always seek consent and adapt treatment to your comfort level.

Do I have to remove my clothing?

No. Wear loose, comfortable clothing. Depending on the treatment area, you may be asked to undress to your underwear (sports bras and shorts recommended). Always communicate your comfort level with your practitioner.

How long is a treatment and how many sessions will I need?

The first consultation is usually 60 minutes, with follow-ups ranging from 15 to 60 minutes. The number of treatments depends on your condition and goals.

How will I feel after treatment?

After your first session, your body may need 3–4 days to readjust. You might feel immediate relief, temporary worsening of symptoms, or no change at first. These are all normal responses. Increased water intake is recommended to help flush out toxins released during treatment. If symptoms persist beyond five days, contact your osteopath.

Is manual osteopathy safe?

Manual osteopathy is widely recognized as a safe, drug-free, non-invasive therapy for neuromusculoskeletal and joint issues. Minor soreness may occur after treatment, similar to post-exercise soreness, but it usually resolves within 24 hours.

Is manual osteopathy appropriate for children?

Yes. Children are very active and often experience falls, sports impacts, or other physical strains. Manual osteopathy is adapted to the child’s needs and is performed with very gentle techniques.

Do I need a doctor’s referral?

No referral is usually required, though some insurance providers may ask for one. Check with your insurer before booking.

What’s the difference between a Manual Osteopath and a Chiropractor?

In Canada and the US, Doctors of Osteopathy (DOs) and Medical Doctors (MDs) are licensed physicians. They can prescribe medication, order diagnostic tests, and perform surgery. Manual osteopaths are not MDs or DOs. At Urban Massage & Wellness, our practitioners are skilled therapists trained in hands-on osteopathic techniques to restore balance and function.

How much does manual osteopathy cost?

Pricing depends on treatment length. See our pricing page for details.

Is manual osteopathy covered by insurance?

Yes, many insurance plans cover osteopathy under chiropractic, physiotherapy, or massage categories. Please confirm with your provider. Note: direct billing is not available for MO treatments. Payment is due at the time of service, and receipts are provided for reimbursement. We accept cash, debit, Visa, and MasterCard.
