The craniosacral system is a subtle yet powerful part of the body that supports your brain, spinal cord, and overall wellbeing. When restrictions occur in this system, it can affect how you feel—physically, mentally, and emotionally.
At Urban Massage & Wellness, our skilled practitioners offer Craniosacral Therapy (CST) to help restore balance and release tension using the lightest touch. This deeply relaxing therapy supports your body’s natural ability to heal and self-regulate.
What is the Craniosacral System?
The craniosacral system extends from the bones of your skull (cranium) down to the sacrum at the base of your spine. It includes:
- Cranial and spinal bones
- Membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord
- Cerebrospinal fluid
- Related connective tissues and nerve pathways
Like a tide, the cerebrospinal fluid flows in a gentle rhythm. When that rhythm is disrupted—due to injury, stress, trauma, or tension—your health and energy can be affected.
How Craniosacral Therapy Works
CST is a hands-on, light-touch therapy designed to assess and release restrictions within this system. Our trained Registered Massage Therapists (RMTs) use gentle techniques to palpate and ease tension in the head, spine, and surrounding tissues.
Because the craniosacral system is so delicate, treatment involves very little pressure—often no more than the weight of a nickel. These subtle adjustments can help:
- Improve nervous system function
- Ease chronic pain and tension
- Support emotional release and relaxation
- Promote deep healing and balance throughout the body
What to Expect During Your Session
Your appointment begins with a conversation about your symptoms, concerns, and goals. Your therapist will assess the flow of the craniosacral rhythm and the surrounding fascia using light palpation.
Depending on what’s found, treatment may address:
- Osseous restrictions (limited mobility in cranial bones)
- Membranous restrictions (tension in the protective membranes)
Each session is tailored to your body’s needs. Many clients report a sense of calm, clarity, and physical ease during and after their treatment.
For first-time clients, we recommend booking a 60-minute session to allow for a complete assessment and full treatment experience.
Benefits of Craniosacral Therapy
CST supports a wide range of conditions and overall wellness by working with the body—not against it. It is commonly used to help:
- Headaches and migraines
- TMJ dysfunction (jaw pain)
- Neck and back pain
- Scoliosis
- Insomnia or sleep issues
- Anxiety and mood disorders
- Chronic stress or trauma recovery
- Nervous system regulation
- Post-concussion support
- Whiplash or motor vehicle accident recovery
If you’re curious about how CST might support your specific needs, our team is happy to guide you.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is CST the same as massage therapy?
CST (Craniosacral Therapy) is not the same as massage therapy. While some of our Registered Massage Therapists incorporate CST into their treatments, it is a distinct technique that focuses on the craniosacral system and uses gentle, subtle touch to support the nervous system. It does not involve the muscle kneading or deep pressure typically associated with massage.
CST is offered only by practitioners who are specifically trained in the technique—including some of our RMTs and our Manual Osteopaths. You can check our booking page or staff bios to see who provides this service.
Do I need to undress?
No. Craniosacral therapy is typically done fully clothed. If your session includes massage, your practitioner will let you know when to undress to your comfort level. We recommend wearing loose, comfortable clothing.
Is CST helpful for people recovering from a car accident or whiplash?
Yes, CST can be very beneficial for people recovering from motor vehicle accidents, especially those experiencing whiplash, headaches, nervous system dysregulation, or trauma symptoms. The gentle approach can support tissue healing and calm the body’s stress response. Always check with your healthcare provider if you’re in an acute stage of recovery.
What’s the minimum session length you recommend if I’m new to CST?
We recommend booking a 60-minute session for your first visit. This allows time for intake, assessment, treatment, and post-session integration. Shorter sessions may not give your body enough time to fully relax into the process, especially if CST is new to you.
Will I be on my back the whole time? What if I can’t lie down?
Not necessarily. While many CST techniques are done with the client lying on their back, your practitioner will always adapt to your comfort and mobility. We can use side-lying or seated positions if lying flat is uncomfortable or not possible for you.
What if I zone out during the session?
Many clients enter a deeply relaxed, meditative state during CST—it’s completely normal to zone out or lose track of time. In fact, this often means your nervous system is shifting into a state of rest and repair, which is exactly what we want. You don’t need to stay fully alert to benefit from the treatment—your body is still responding to the work, even if your mind drifts.
How will I feel after?
Some people feel deeply relaxed or even euphoric after a session, while others may feel sleepy, emotional, or more energized. The effects can continue to unfold for up to 48 hours. We encourage you to be gentle with yourself and take note of any changes in your body, mood, or energy.
Is there anything I should do after my session besides rest?
Staying well-hydrated is always a good idea—especially after bodywork. While there’s no strong evidence that massage or CST “flushes out toxins,” drinking water supports overall tissue health, circulation, and your body’s natural self-regulation processes. Gentle movement (like a light walk or stretching) and quiet time to reflect can also help you integrate the session. If possible, avoid overstimulation, intense exercise, or back-to-back appointments after CST—your nervous system may need some time and space to process the changes.
How often should I book CST?
This varies depending on your goals and how your body responds. Some clients benefit from weekly sessions initially, while others come in monthly for maintenance and nervous system support. Your practitioner can help you build a plan that works for you.
Are there any reasons I shouldn’t get CST?
CST is very gentle, but certain conditions require medical clearance before booking. These include:
- Recent head trauma or skull fracture
- Increased intracranial pressure
- Cerebral aneurysm or hemorrhage
- Cerebrospinal fluid leak
- Spina bifida (myelomeningocele)
- Arnold Chiari malformation
Can I receive CST after a concussion?
Yes—but only after you’ve been medically assessed and are stable. We recommend waiting at least 48 hours post-injury.
